I appreciate everyone's American right to express their opinion publicly on beach access. I understand locals' fears of the culture changing or even dying with increased beach closures. I respect the strength, resilience, and adaptability that the local culture is so famous for and believe it is a culture worth preserving. Just wanted to comment on the site - I had trouble figuring out if this was Pro Beach Access or Pro Bird (etc.) sight

I latter figured it out but you might want to put up a title saying "Fight for you rights to Fish/Surf etc"

I sent my Senators and Congressman the letters per this website....hope it helps...makes me so angry just thinking about it and I don't live there (yet).

Driving down route 12 in Salvo, Avon, Buxton and Hatteras I cant help but notice all the signs posted in the yards of locals crying for "their" beaches back. Written haphazardly in spray paint with bad punctuation and crooked lettering, you can't sense the disgust in the person's tense handwriting. I wonder if it's just the fact of the matter? The fact that anything taken away from you would cause the same reaction. You want "your" beaches back to drive your big-tired, 10 ...

The NPS was able to open about 7/10 of a mile to the right of South Point road today for pedestrians and ORV. The last plover hatched her eggs last weekend and began to move the chicks to the sound. Which gave the park service some room to reopen this small section. However, since then, all chicks have been lost most likely due to predation. With the loss of the chicks, the consent decree requires 14 days closure to see if birds will renest.

According to the NPS resource report for the week ending Jun 18, an American Oystercatcher was killed by it's sibling. Does this mean now that all Oyestercatcher chicks have to be banned from the Oystercatcher breeding areas? Sounds like DOW and Audobon need to sue the birds next.

The fact of the matter is that the destruction has continued too long. Our ground waters are being tainted. Concentrates are pumped into the sound from treatment plants. Habitats and ecology have been destroyed. The island is eroding from both sides because of the dune lines. The beaches have not closed. There are 40 miles of beach easily acessable.

If the amount of traffic and destruction to our livelyhood continues we will all lose out.

Here is to reclaiming our ecology and heritage. Hopefully ...

There is no reason in this Troposhere that humans and animals can not co-exist. I have always been a fan of taking away beach driving.. People can go to the beach without driving on it. It is called walking... But closing the beach altogether is absurd. And it wont happen. there is to much money in that sand for it to just be closed on account of some birds.. It wont happen. However it is a good thing that people are coming together and doing something. People these days dont have any fight left ...

I would like to propose that we do not attempt to repair ANY storm damage to any of the outer banks.

I would like to let nature be free to enjoy the changes it so desperately seeks.

The sounds and bays need fresh influxes of ocean water and currents to maintain its natural balance.

When frisco was cut in half a few years ago due to hurricane, i mean natural means it was nature's way of saying the sounds and bays needed this influx of fresh ocean waters and currents.

Actually I don't advise that as I believe the dunes are protected regardless of the presence or absence of plovers. Your best bet is to talk with the National Park Service -- they have monitors watching the chicks and can probably advise on the best viewing areas. Good luck.

Maybee the realtor desk people could quickly go over the situation at the beach and encourage people to call Dept of interior or NPS headquarters (provide phone numbers). Also encourage them to write.

It's a sh###y way to start a vacation, but it would get the message out.

First off I have been visiting Hatteras Island yearly since 1987 when our family returned from a 5 year tour of duty in Europe-Germany & England. My father was in the US Army which leads me to what I really want to talk about.
